The Capital of the UAE is now growing almost as fast as neighbouring Dubai in every area except golf courses although three are planned in the next few years. The only course worthy of mention is the exceptional Abu Dhabi Golf Club with its unique falcon shaped clubhouse.

The course is host to the European PGA tour Abu Dhabi Golf Classic in late January which has seen some impressive wins for Chris Dimarco and Paul Casey in recent years.

The course is long and challenging off the back tees and is always in great condition and a delight to play. It is located about 20 minutes drive from downtown Abu Dhabi.

The city with its 2 mile Corniche has many fine restaurants and shopping malls so you can find much to amuse oneself after a round of golf.

Bangkok is one of the world's most exciting and colorful cities with so much to see and do that you will have to plan well to get it all in. The surrounding countryside also has a number of great courses for the enjoyment of the travelling golfer such as the excellent Thai Country Club and the Bangkok Golf Club.

Charleston is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA and has been enthusiastically preserved in its original pre Civil War state. Walk down the streets of the Historic District and very little has changed over the last hundred and fifty years and the first shots of the American Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbour in 1861 in what turned into one of the longest sieges in history. Take a guided carriage ride around the Old Market and out to the beautiful houses along the Battery to get a feel of the history of this lovely place.

Great golf is all around the city and Ocean Course at Kiawah Island, where the famous 1991 "war on the shore" Ryder Cup was played is only an hour away. Also on Kiawah is the new luxury Sanctuary Resort where you can pamper yourself with every luxury before and after playing some of the best golf in the USA.

Access from the UK is via connecting flights on most transatlantic airlines into Charleston. One note of caution is that the weekends are very expensive due to the large number of domestic visitors.

Located on the North West Region of Spain in the heart of Catalonia you will find one of the most picturesque Golf Regions in Spain. For many years the Costa Brava has been the understated Golf Region, perhaps as the climate is slightly cooler than its counterparts or perhaps as has been undiscovered. Many of the best Golf Courses and hotels in the region are located within a short drive of Girona, the drive from Barcelona is relatively easy one and with frequent flights from both Gatwick and Heathrow currently a preferred one.

Cyprus is a land of rich and ancient history set in the eastern Mediterranean with a year round perfect golfing climate and easy access from the UK. The Island has a long history as a British outpost and the excellent Intercontinental Aphrodite Hills Golf Resort has a superb golf course designed by Cabell Robinson with wonderful views over the sea and some very testing holes with lots of elevation changes.

Paphos is the gateway airport to the western side of the Island and this quaint town with a long history, you can enjoy some varied sightseeing in the old town or the marina where local delicacies can be enjoyed at any number of great restaurants and bars. The beaches are some of the best in the Med and once you have spent time on Cyprus you will want to return to it's tranquil beauty and recharge the batteries.

Dubai is rapidly becoming a serious challenger to more established European destinations when people are thinking about their next golf holiday. The whole experience is a delight and attracts millions of visitors during the summer holiday months when the wonderful white sandy beach really comes into its own.

You can access Myrtle Beach Airport from the UK from most regional and main airports although all require a connecting flight in the USA . Other options are to fly from Gatwick to Raleigh/Durham flight on American Airlines but you will have a three hour drive to Myrtle Beach.

Palm Springs has long been the desert playground of Hollywood's elite with everyone from Frank Sinatra to Bob Hope and Mickey Roony having homes there. One of the big draws to the high desert area is its warm winter climate and abundance of top quality golf courses, restaurants, shopping and resorts.

The Coachella valley runs for some 30 miles through 7 different towns which are all collectively known as Palm Springs, so when you see that a resort is located in La Quinta or Ranch Mirage they may be some way from the town of Palm Springs itself.

Palm Springs is located about two hours drive from Los Angeles but this can take longer especially on Fridays when everyone heads out of town for the weekend. You will also need to make reservations at the best restaurants as they also get very busy. Shopping is superb with a huge outlet mall located on the highway just outside Palm Springs and a number of top quality malls and shopping areas like El Paseo Drive featuring many of the world top brands. There are also a number of casinos in Palm Springs for those looking for a little flutter.

The golf is world class and whether you are a low or high handicapper you will always find superb golf in some spectacular desert settings framed by the mountains.

Two hours drive south east from Bangkok, Pattaya has some great golf courses including the sensational Jack Nicklaus Laem Chabang.

The holiday island of Phuket is a short flight from Bangkok. Boasting a number of Thailand's best 5 star resorts, the golf is also top drawer and the relaxed pace of life will soon have you swinging like a pro.

There are few places in the world that can compare with North Carolina as a golfing destination and the jewel in the crown is the fabulous Pinehurst Resort where in 1999 and 2005 two of the greatest US Opens have taken place on the fabled No.2 Course. This Donald Ross masterpiece is just one of 8 courses at the Pinehurst Resort and there are another 20 in the surrounding Sandhills area where the gently rolling countryside is so well suited to the crafting of superb golf courses like Tobacco Road, The Pit and The National.

The access to the area could not be easier from the UK with direct flights into both Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte which are only just over an hours drive away from Pinehurst. For those looking for some seaside golf then the area from Bald Head Island down to the South Carolina border is full of some of the finest golf courses most of which generally come under the heading of Myrtle Beach although they are actually in North Carolina. Courses such as Tidewater, Oyster Bay and Sea Trail are just a few of the Myrtle Beach area courses in North Carolina.

Scottsdale is the greatest golf destination in the world for desert golf, that unique experience where the raw beauty of the wild and dangerous is tamed by the ribbons of emerald green threaded through it. You really can not replicate the golf in Scottsdale anywhere else and the area has attracted some of the very best golf course designers eager to put their stamp on the drama of the desert landscape.

The TPC of Scottsdale plays host to what is the rowdiest PGA Tour event of the year, The FBR Phoenix Open, where the par three 16th is turned into a cauldron of spectators in stands along three sides and standing 30 deep on the hill behind the green waiting to cheer any ball that stays on the green and boo loudly any ball that does not. It was here that Tiger made a hole in one which prompted the entire crown to go crazy and throw beer over themselves and everyone else. Tiger has not returned.

Scottsdale is not just about golf as it is one of the most affluent places in America and the range of resorts and hotels is second to none as is the shopping and dining on offer. Culturally the area is justly proud of its native American heritage and the range of tours that specialize in the ecology of the desert.

Phoenix Sky Harbour Airport has direct flights from London on BA and just about every US airline flying from the UK has connecting flights. Scottsdale is about a 5 hour drive from the Grand Canyon while the red rock country of Sedona is just two hours drive away.

Tenerife is located off the north coast of Africa, with summer breezes providing a comfortable temperate climate, ideal for year-round golf.
